I'm totally kicking myself for not having insurance on my mare... between the tendon injury/non-healing skin wound last year and the suspensory strain this year the vet bills have been painful to say the least. I just caught up on the last few days (been off the net) and noticed you have a non-healing wound too. My mare's started in Aug. 09 and would.not.heal! I tried everthing, different ointments, wrapped 24/7, wrapped part of the day, not wrapped, etc. It got to the point where the tissue around the wound was starting to die and turn black. In November a surgeon friend of my vet recommended we try an amnion covering... yep, cleaned amniotic sac tissue. I used super glue to attach it to the shaved hair around the wound and it acted as a skin graft to allow new tissue to grow across. In our case, the new tissue didn't start growing until necrotic tendon fibers had worked out, but it is the treatment that worked for us. At it's largest the wound was almost two inches across, on the front of her left hind cannon bone. So, long story short, if there is no infection in the wound the amnion might be something (free) to look into. Since it's a by-product of foaling it's free tissue. Just need to be cleaned with betadine and water, then cut into 12x122 squares, rolled between two layers of plastic wrap, and frozen. Simple and easy! Let me know if you're interested in more details and/or pictures :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15321118722150772797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-52371353161094311.post-7537262348058729212010-06-22T17:21:35.915-07:002010-06-22T17:21:35.915-07:00Wow, close call! FANTASTIC...Wow, close call! Glad you made it okay.

FANTASTIC the surgery will be covered. They will probably cover the rehab if they justify prescribing it to the insurance company's satisfaction.Leah Fryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18158981037468411293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-52371353161094311.post-15800284962982869362010-06-22T12:15:19.406-07:002010-06-22T12:15:19.406-07:00Wheee that is GREAT news!!!
