Leasing Denali

About 9 months ago I put Denali up for lease. I had a very nice woman come out and ride her and she really liked Denali. I chickened out. We were at the old barn and it was crazy! I didn't want anyone riding her in the unsafe outdoor arena (no fence and a large highway down the hill.) I think I'm at that place that I am ready to find someone else to ride her. Especially since our trainer won't be back on her anytime soon. Denali has so much talent, more talent then I think I'll ever tap. I know people sometimes sell their horses when they have a horse with loads of talent and they don't. I don't think I could ever do that. When I have more time, I'll get more talent ;0)

She does so well for experienced riders. They all love her. I just want someone to ride her and keep her work ethic. I can ride her, but I am working on me, along with working on her. It's hard to think about "sharing" your horse, but she is amazing and would bring someone else a lot of joy. I'd love to find someone who would want to show her. We haven't gotten there yet, and we were (are) suppose to go in January. I keep putting it off because I'm terrified.

I started feeding Denali and have changed up her grain/supplements. She's getting around three pounds of grain a day. It is specially made by some place up north. I don't have the content on hand. She gets Trifecta supplements, vitamins, mare magic, Vitamin E, a little bit of corn oil, and now Cocosoya oil. I swear she's gained weight in the past four days. She LOVES Cocosoya oil! I still haven't washed my jacket, she kept licking me. I took her blanket off tonight and she was SO SHINY! I know it can't happen that fast, can it? It was impressive.

My hands are so cold from working at the barn. Brr...

Hahaha, yep, horses go nuts over Cocosoya oil. I'm glad to hear that Denali is doing so well on it.

It seems like you're giving Denali a lot of vitamin supplements; just make sure you're not overdoing it. Commercial grains are fortified with vitamins and minerals, so you could be just throwing away a lot of money. Certainly, hoof supplements, joint supplements, antioxidants, probiotics, etc. are all great additions to your horse's feed; but, like I said, you might not need the additional vitamins.
The one exception is the Vitamin E, which I understand you are "super-loading" in order to deal with the EPM.
I know a lot of people also like to give extra Vitamic C, as well (it's an antoxidant). But, again, you probably don't need any other additional vitamins. Denali might just be peeing them all out!
Maybe, instead of the extra vitamin supplement, you might want to look into grape seed extract. It's an amzingly powerful antioxidant. I know Uckele makes one. So does Springtime Inc. (www.springtimeinc.com). It looks like a great company, but I can't vouch for them because I haven't bought anything from them (yet!).

Oops! I was wrong. I just looked at Springtime Inc.'s website and they do not sell grape seed extract. I could have sworn that they did!

Yeah, looking at her grain, the only think it really lacks is fat content (hence the extra corn oil) her supplements (joint) is mainly because she had some slight issues with her front right before and again when I got her (one surgery and one injury to her fetlock) so I just want to make sure I can keep that leg as healthy as possible. The extra vitamins come from our trainer (part of board) and are factored into her feed. The only thing right now she's getting "extra" is vitamin E. I'm loading her up on that! It's crazy what you can give a horse! That's my biggest fear is her literally "Pissing away" my money. lol.

Sounds like you've got it all figured out! If the extra vitamins are included in her board, then the worst that it will do is nothing (and at least you aren't spending the extra money on them).
And, yes, it is crrrazy all the extra "stuff" you can give a horse. I have to rein myself in quite frequently.
Oh, forgot to add last time that extra B vitamins can actually help to calm nervous horses.

Leasing out your horse is an interesting idea. I've thought about doing that with Izzy if I get to a point where I can't ride her enough, but the idea that someone else could do something stupid to her kind of scares me. Of course, I do plenty of stupid things, too.

Keep us updated on your progress.
